Glass-lining is a demanding coating process in which metal surfaces are covered with a glass-lined layer forming a composite material. This layer not only provides protection against chemical corrosion and abrasion, italso ensures a hygienic and easy-to-clean surface—qualities that are essential in many industrial applications.

At THALETEC, we glass-line a wide range of components: large reactors, agitators, shafts, and a variety of smaller parts. Each part presents its own challenges, whether due to varying materials, geometries, or intended applications.

Manual labor as the key to quality

Despite state-of-the-art tools and machinery, glass-lining remains a process shaped by skilled manual work. After meticulous surface preparation-including cleaning, degreasing, grinding and blasting-the specially formulated glass-lining material is applied by hand. A uniform and bubble-free application is crucial to prevent weak points.

The coating is typically applied in multiple layers and fired at temperatures up to 1,700°F (930°C). During firing, the glass coating chemically bonds to the metal substrate, creating a highly durable, smooth surface. The firing process is precisely regulated and controlled by the electronics: temperature curves, cycle duration, and cooling must be carefully monitored to avoid stress or cracking.

Automation quickly reaches its limits here: the wide range of component sizes and shapes, combined with stringent surface quality requirements, makes the expertise of trained specialists indispensable. Only experienced technicians can detect and correct surface flaws early in the process.
