Thin layer glass for heat exchangers
Glass lined heat exchangers are very good as evaporators, condensators and for the liquid/liquid heat exchange.
Innovative solutions - as for the heat transfer on optimized glass lining coatings, of the material and the seal-free connections between tube sheets and the there connected glass lined tubes open wide application possibilities in the chemical industry.

New technical features – such as the reduced layer thicknesses and connections without seals between tube plates and tube ends – provide the opportunity to use this kind of heat exchanger as an element in a glass-lined system.
So far glass lined heat transfer elements hardly came into question as an alternative to their metal counterparts, because they are bigger in volume, and have too big flow areas and are too heavy as well - in other words simply too expensive. An externaly glass lined compact and seal-free pipework bundle heat exchanger eliminates all these disadvantages and can close the gap between reactor, column, storage vessel and receivers. It enables the closed concept of glass lined material, whenever corrosion resistance in the manufacturing is most important. In addition, sealing weaknesses are eliminated which arise during welding, rolling, milling or other sealing procedure.
The effects of a relative low thermal conductivity of glass linings are significantly reduced layer thickness of the U-tubes from 0.6 to 0.8 mm, whereas the glass lining layers are electrostacically deposited. This process assures an homogene material structure with extreme low layer thickness variations of the layer thickness. This assures an uniform heat distribution and thermically counteracts with peak tensions on the glass lining layer.
Before fixing, the ends of the U-tubes and the tube sheets are mechanically processed The connection is liquid- and gas-tight, and meets the
highest pressure requirements. Assembly is performed by temperature differences of minus 160 °C between tube ends and tube sheets, so that the parts are fixed solely by surface pressure. Tightness check for glass-lined heat exchangers performed by a helium leak test.
Past experience shows that values normaly lay between 10-5 and 10-6 bar. At the same time a static friction strength of up to 20,000 N between tube and tube plate is reached, which eliminates eventual product contamination.
The tube connection can, without damages, be easily separated so that single tube segments can be individually replaced. The connection system totaly complies requirements for GMP-certified de-signs.
This concept virtually completely eliminates all product residues and product contaminations. The glass-lined tubes are
suitable for use in pressure vessels and – as a result of the described properties – can be increased up to the yield point. Tests with this kind of heat exchangers reached up to 230 °C.
As a compact heat exchanger, depending on dimentional requirements, it is also possible to install the heat exchanger in a vertical or horizontal position.
